Care shows up differently in everyone's practice. It can be the quiet act of picking up a brush after a hard week, the discipline of returning to the page, or the vulnerability of sharing something you made. This first issue of The Work of Art brings together 17 artists and writers from across the country who responded to that theme — each in their own form, their own voice, their own understanding of what it means to create with intention.

What follows is not a single definition of care, but a collection of perspectives. We hope something here stays with you.
